Austin Sushi News: August 21st, 2000

KYOTO II EXPANDS

Kyoto II is expanding their space by 25%. They've acquired the
space next door (formerly Little Caesar's Pizza) and are busily
renovating it.  A new sushi bar with more seats has already been
built in the new space, and it's much nicer than the current one.
Work is expected to be completed by August 25th.

THE UMI SCOOP

We mentioned last month that a new sushi bar will be
opening soon. Umi's, on the southbound
frontage road of I-35 at Stassney Lane, is still under construction.
Saga-san, former co-head sushi chef at Musashino,
is the brains behind this new sushi operation.  He had a falling
out with Smokey, the owner of Musashino, and, after spending some
time as a sushi chef in Las Vegas, he's back in Austin and busily
preparing to open this new sushi venue.  Expect this sushi bar to
offer some delicacies that aren't available at your typical Austin
sushi venue.

WAITING FOR KENICHI

The hottest new sushi bar is still way under construction at 5th and
Colorado.  We're talking about Kenichi, of course.  According to
local architects, Dick Clark Architecture, construction should start
in about one month, with an expected opening of late February,
2001.  Meanwhile, you can salivate over the pics at www.kenichi.com, the
web site for their current Aspen, Colorado, location.

DOWN AND OUT

If you see a talented sushi chef flipping burgers at your local
greasy spoon, it's probably Iku Toshi, renegade sushi chef
from Musashino.  After leaving Musashino, he was last seen working at
Banzai on the Drag, and then at Mangia Pizza. Though he's from a well-to-do
Japanese family, and a very creative and experienced sushi chef,
he has apparently embraced the homeless life for a while.
Get this guy a job!!
