Arirang Sushi on 6th

Body:

Has any one been to or heard anything about the new sushi restaurant on 6th? It's called Arirang Sushi on 6th between I-35 & Red River. Just curious if anyone has been.

Ok, I tried the place. I felt like I was in a small strip mall is southern california. No scratch that. A small strip mall in the Korean part of southern california, The South Korean flag was more prominent then the sushi menu. As for taste, quality and service (1-5 rating/1low 5 good). I'd say 1.5 / 2 / 3.5. The sushi we ordered was sake, unagi, maguro, and hamachi. All were under par, over 3 days old, cut far to thin to be called nigiri, and the hamachi lacked taste. The spicy sauce was way to spicy, I think they left out a bottle of kewpie when making it. Rolls were very limited, If you enjoy places like Umi or Mushashino you'll be dissapointed in not just the fish but the small seleciton of rolls too. The one minor highlight is the Spider roll, one of the best I've had recently. The amout of crab to avocado to cucumber was perfect. That was a 5, everything else a 1 or less = average 1.5. Save your money too. I compared priced from Arirang to Uchi the other new sushi bar in my area. Arirang had higher prices on almost everything but nigiri. And frankly I'll pay the extra .50 for a real cut of fish, rather then a skinny HEB pre pack slice. Sashimi is way overpriced. 13.95 for hamachi, its twelve at Uchi. And pound for pound the food is just bad. We also tried the Beef Bento Box. Just stay away from this place in general. They can't even get Beef in a box right, don't trust them with the knife. EAT HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK> I SAY NO MORE-I'm going elseware next week. :)

This is my favorite sushi place in Austin. My boyfriend used to work in a Japanese restaurant for about two years, and we ate there often. He ate there daily, and it was excellent. This place is very similar. It is not pretentious, it is just plain delicious. The staff are also very nice. I encourage everyone I know to support this restaurant. I have not had any Korean fare there, but their sushi and sashimi are wonderful. Above all, the sushi chef takes great pride in presentation, and that adds so much to the experience. Please go! :D

The sushi was sooo good. We had the spider roll, the caterpillar roll, california roll and the spicy tuna and salmon rolls. For the quality of food the prices were excellent. Our waitress that night was actually the owner's daughter and she told us that they had a change in sushi chefs. We were really surprised by how fresh everything tasted. We've been going there almost every other week to get our sushi fix. The atmosphere wasn't all that impressive but it was nicely decorated. It never seems to be too busy but the word must be getting around because the last few times I've gone there it seemed busier. Plus the beers and sake bombers are cheap.

Sound like one real review and two from the owners. I've been there...it was OK. nothing to write home about and certainly not the best around...or even downtown. :?

The place is good. If you don't want to spend alot of money for sushi, want good quality stuff, and want to avoid all the Yuppies in Austin this is the place. Plus it is on sixth street and you can go get wasted after the meal!!! :P

Arirang was GOD-awful. The sushi-chef... sorry to insult real sushi-chefs by calling the high-school boy who was preparing the sushi took forever even though we were the only ones in the place. The sushi was also horrible, you'd get better, fresher sushi at HEB. The fish slices were soo thin and had freezer burn on them... My friends and I (all asian by the way, having eaten sushi everywhere including Japan) were totally disgusted by this place. I purposely have looked around for websites reviewing Arirang because NO ONE SHOULD EVER GO THERE. I do not know how they are still open but I will be amazed if they don't close soon because this place SUCKS UNBELIEVABLY. The owners must have absolutley no pride for serving this crap to people.

We bumped into this place by mistake, because my wife and I weren't able to find the original place we wanted to go to. I just read the previous review, and I have to agree with most of what "disgusted" wrote. I ordered hae-dub-bab (don't know if I spelled it correctly, but it's something similar to chirashi), and the salmon/tuna pieces were smaller than a sugar cube, in addition to them being old. The portion was quite small and I always love how restaurants try to present small portions in a bigger plate. It was less than appetizing, but since I already paid $13 for it, I just had to try to finish it to not waste food. Not to bash on this place that much more, but we ordered beer, and they gave us a cafeteria-style, light brown, translucent glass to drink out of. I'm not too picky, but this is a first, and I just resorted to drinking out of the bottle instead. Every other Korean/Japanese place in town, at least tries to bring a frosted mug or better glass. Well, the positive is that the place was quiet (maybe because there wasn't anyone else there) and my wife and I had a good conversation without shouting at each other to be heard. This place needs major improvements or the owner seriously has to consider at least serving fresh catches, instead of tuna slices that were cut so thin that they are about to fall apart. I don't mind paying the price, but the food quality has to at least be on par with it. I was quite disappointed.

This place is great. The sushi is so fresh and the price is reasonable. The lunch bento box is amazingly good. Inside a 5-section box, we have almost everything that fulfill our lunch. I highly recommend this place to everybody.
