24th street sushi

Body:

My wife and I have been eating at sushi niichi (spelled correctly) for several months now. It is a small, very inconspicuous place across from the conoco station on 24th street near Guadalupe. I have been to Musasino, sushi sake, uchi, etc etc. This place has by far the best, freshest sushi I have come across in this town. Though the chef is quite young, don't be fooled. He can whup your favorite chef by a country mile. The quality of the food has never wavered which is something I cannot say about the better known places in this town. The best part is the value. The prices are comparable to other, better known establishments, but the amount of food you get, particularly in the rolls, blows those places away. Sushi Niichi seems to be Austins best kept sushi secret. I'd like to see someone shine a light on this place. Thanks, Andy Bruchey

Hmmmm. I must have been to sushi niichi on a really off night. The place was really cute and the people were nice, but the sushi was of the inedible variety. The few bites I tried was so off in flavor I threw up when I got home. I've never ever had sushi make me ill before or after that time and I've been eating sushi at least once a week for 8 years.

Oh! I've been to Niichi three times, and each time it's been phenomenal. I mean, I've wanted to cry when I left, but only because it's so good.

Oh, well, much to my chagrin, Sushi Niichi is closing down, probably within the week. The owner said it was just too difficult keeping the kitchen and Momoko going at the same time. It will be replaced with a tea and pastries place. I'm saddened, but at least I got out there one last time tonight.

Niichi has opened back up. They and Momoko switched places. I'm going there for my birthday next month!

Well, went to Niichi last night. It was a bit of a disappointment in that they're now "Sushi Niichi Express" meaning they cut a bunch of stuff out of their menu. They used to have a great appetizer and bento menu, but now, it's just a few pages of rolls and some simple apps. The sushi was still all right, but not as good as it used to be. I didn't see the regular sushi chef there. I think it was just the owner doing the sushi, but I'm not sure. That place was my favorite spot for sushi, but now we'll have to venture out and find a new one.
